{Thumbs up} Your guide to Image Editors!

Introduction
Seen themes and wallpapers that made you go "Wow", wanted to make them yourself but don't know what program to use.

For a start, MS Paint is a big no-no, that program stinks and is too basic for theme creations.

-- Full Graphic Editors --

Paint.Net - Free

Paint.NET is image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple tool for photo and image editing. The programming language used to create Paint.NET is C#, with a small amount of C++ for installation and shell-integration related functionality.

Adobe Photoshop - $649 (30 days free trial)

The king of image editors, this program is used by professionals (and by Lasyk's best themers), with the price tag to show.
The thing that makes Photoshop so superior is the Plug-Ins that do stunning and professional effects, and with the many plugins available from the internet, it makes Photoshop the imaging powerhouse.

Google Picasa - Free

Click thumbnail to view full sized image
Why spend several hundred dollars for graphics software when you can use a top-notch free app such as Google Picasa? This photo editing and sharing program from Google is a big hit with PC World editors and polled readers alike. Says one reader: "Beautiful interface. Excellent for organizing or anything else--touching up, slide show, screen saver, and wallpaper." Other respondents gave Google Picasa kudos for making finding and editing pictures a breeze. We agree: The number and sophistication of the tools built into this program would be remarkable for even a for-pay application. Whether you're looking to add special effects, manipulate your images, organize them, or share them, this is the tool to get.

Any other programs you can recommend?

Sure is, but it takes a while to get used to it, thats why I recomend P.N because you get used to it quicker than PS.

I've added IrfanView but not MS Picture Manager, as I don't know if it's free or not, or even available for download.

I started off with PS, and I found it really easy to use. There is no difficulty involved. So, I agree with J4M35McL, PS is recommended.

It depends really, some people can use PS easily to use on their first go, but other people (like me) find it quite hard to use at first (But the more I use it, the easier it should get).
