If you have an apple mac, and use iTunes, here's how to make mp3 ringtones for your phone.

If you subscribe to Orange, the phone should ring for about 21seconds before diverting to answer phone, so you don't need mp3 files any larger than this...

After discovering my phone can play mp3 files as ringtones, I immediately grabbed some of my favorite songs and tried to crop and convert them. After trying to do so using Quicktime Pro and iTunes (far more hassle then it's worth), I gave up until I found a hint online (posted by an anonymous forumite elsewhere) that lets you do the same thing in iTunes in half the time!

First, in iTunes you need to go to Prefs, then Import, then change your import settings to mp3 (I used 128kbps, quality is less important than compactness for my ringtones). Then, find the song you want, and go through the song to figure out which part you want to be the ringtone (IE: 00:30.00 to 00:51.00) and then Command-I to get info on the song. Under the Options tab in the Get Info menu, check both start and stop time and enter the start and stop times for the ringtone section (i.e. Start time 00:30.00 End Time 00:51.00). You may want to play it once to make sure it's well cropped. Then, just select the song in your library and go to Advanced -> Convert Selection to MP3. It will automatically convert ONLY the portion of the song that you selected to a new, cropped MP3 file, which can then be dragged onto the desktop and used. This is infinitely easier than trying to crop and convert in another application, and now you can have the coolest ringtone on the block in half the time!

If you have Panther, you just need a USB Bluetoth dongle, and OSX already contains a great file browser allowing you to send the to your phone and back it all up.

Hi Gaffer74,

I have followed your instructions and created an MP3, sent it to the phone and answered 'Yes' to the message "Use as ringtone".

However I then get a message "Cannot be used". When I go to select a ringtone, I do not get to see my MP3's in the selection list. Only my recordings, the tunes that came with the phone and my Ringtone creations.

How do I play my MP3's as Ringtones?!

and I thought Orange was bad :grin:
I'm in the process of looking for a local SonyEricsson center in the hope that I can pay £10-£20 to upgrade to the latest Sony Firmware (hopefully this'll get rid of the poxy Orange customisation).
I'm sure if you tried this it would get rid of the vodaphone locks

This is a long shot, but a few months back I heard a ringtone that was pretty dancy sounding, with a Chinese accented voice saying 'Hello' intermitently. Anyone ever heard anything similar? If so, any idea where I can get it?

i cant believe vodafone hav done that!? i mean havin mp3s as ringtones is a main feauture of the actual phone and vodafone r spoilin it! y cant they just put 'vodafone' on the homepage and leave the rest alone. i feel sorry for any1 with a k700 on vodafone. im on orange and there are a few annoying things but nothing like that!

If only this was true... Used the DRM software, followed the tutorial, got the little key next to the ringtone... clicked "use as ringtone" and guess what... IT STILL DOESNT WORK....

Vodafone have really lost some friends here....
