I want to take selected tunes from my iTunes library and transfer these to my phone (w800i). I realise thees need to be exported to mp3 but iTunes only allows you to burn mp3 to CD disk (from what I can see). Has anyone had any success takign music from iTunes to their w800? If so, what's the secret?

Further to my original post, I know I can drag files from iTunes which will create .m4a files. I have read that this filetype is problematic with the phone because it creates duplicate files and it is impossible to delete the dupe (http://www.oobrien.com/weblog/archives/2005/08/14/more-w800i-goodness.php). I am therefore reluctant to try this for myself. Has anyone had experience with this exercise?

Thanks "PhoenixBurn". Just to clarify, you have had no problem with the creation of duplicate fm4a files and the w800 is playing them nicely? Do you need to save the tunes in a pecific diretory on the w800?

Thanks Mr ASAP. Tried the geocities link a few times but its not working. Any chance you can provide some commentary on what is lurking on that site?

OK - I take it that there is a plugin for iTunes and that the link Mr ASAP has provided will get me there... but I can never get to download the app as Geocities limit is always exceeded. Is there anywhere else I can get this software?
Can I just frag my m4a files from iTunes to the phone? If so where do I need to drag them to? Tried putting them in the MP3 folder but couldnt find them through the phone. Also tried the Media Files/Audio folder but again couldnt see them in the phone...

just on a kind of on topic/off topic kinda way, i use winamp for playing my tunes on pc. I also have itunes on the pc but is i better than winamp do you know. as for transferring my music. my music--> straight to phone via cable by dragging to mp3 file on memory stick-tres simple! am i missing something here?

Thanks Kevolution. Not sure about Winamp vs iTunes as I havent tried Winamp at all - have all my music in iTunes now so am kinda locked in2 the whole iTunes thing.
Transferring the files to the Mem Stick is the easy bit. But where in the folder do I need to put them in order to be able to see it on my phone?

oh i see!! i think?? dunno about sending straight to phone via the media player that is itunes or winamp but in doing it straight from the music file on your pc(ie my music)
connect your phone via cable- you will need all the relevant drivers for the phone to be recognised by pc. go into my computer and you should see a removable drive (ie the phone). click on it and you will be able to access the phone memory and the memory stick. on your memory stick find the folder labelled mp3. - stick em in there.
make sure and disconnect the phone from the pc to be able to see them on the phone etc.
alternatively use the disc to phone software that came with the phone.
not sure if i'm still missing something in your query here. i wasn't aware this could be done via itunes directly. I've always done it through my music,disc2phone or even bluetooth.
cheers

Hey... I just tried to see these files again and miraculously they are there!! Saved under MediaFiles/Audio. It seems they dont display on the phone whilst it is plugged in to the cable which is why I was having difficulty originally.
Which leads me to just one further qquestion. Does anyone know how you can create Playlists or set the phone to play tracks randomly?

on the phone under media player --> playlists. there is an option to create one and when playing put it on shuffle.

before you import songs from cd to itunes do this= go to preferences, to 'advance'(itunes ver.5) then/or to 'importing or import', change 'import as' to MP3 encoding. so now when you import cds it will be on mp3 format, as for imported ones. select songs and paste it on a new playlist folder on your desktop (or somewhere easily accessible, after choosing songs, select all of the songs on list then press "control+i" or 'file' to 'get info'(mostly for mac computers)on the new window choose 'open with' quicktime, with quicktime select all and save as, which will save as mp3, only if you dont have a program to decode to mp3s

I'm in the same boat. The manual refers to Mac OsX once or twice, which is reassuring, but obviously they don't actually go as far as giving you any useful software on the CD!
I connected the phone and my iMac via the supplied USB cable, and the memory stick came up as a USB drive (no need to install any drivers or anything). So that was cool. I was able to browse the contents of the memory stick - again cool. IPhoto started up automatically, recognised the camera, and let me download photos into iPhoto - very cool.
But when I tried to do what I really wanted, which is drag mp3s out of the iTunes music folder onto the memory stick, the computer hung (spinning rainbow beachball, forever).
I tried to force quit the Finder - and it said something about Finder unresponsive, so I pushed the restart button on the computer. And I then found that the menory stick was fried. NOT cool. The phone wouldn't recognise the stick, and the phone would hang if I tried to turn it on with the stick inside.
Luckily, I was able to take the stick back to the shop pleading ignorance, and they gave me a new one. But now I am very wary of dragging and dropping any mp3s out of the Mac onto the memory stick. Hmmmm - any advice is very welcome!

It can even do on the fly conversion to mp3 as it transfers your itunes songs.

Well if anyone can tell me how to transfer files from a Mac (via USB) to the memory stick, without either creating a load of spurious "._" files or destroying the memory stick, I'd be grateful... My phone has burned up two 0.5 gig sticks so far.

try opening the stick first and leaving that window open for dumping files, rather than dropping it on the icon

no way around that that i know of. although before you unplug, to get rid of ._ on your phone, after deleting it off your screen to the trash bin, you would have to delete or empty your trash. its somehow still connected to the original file. now if you unplug your phone before you empty trash on your computer. youre stuck with it, but whatever you already have on there will stay until you reformat the stick.
http://ilari.scheinin.fidisk.fi/itunemywalkman/ it will load any format without that ._ crap, but it downloads one at a time when you sync up, about the same time with regular click and drag

For Mac users, iTuneMyWalkman - it's easy, works well and not only moves selected playlists(s) to your phone it can move the photos and videos to your Mac. It gets rid of the ._ files and can convert the format of the files if desired.
iTuneMyWalkman is available at
