After you have decided which MP3 song you wish to convert into a ringtone, you need to cut the section from it, for this i use COOL MP3 SPLITTER a 7 day trial can be downloaded from download.com (http://www.download.com)
This is a simple program to use once you have selected the file to be cropped, select a cropping method. i use by method 1, i find it far easier. Once you have selected the points to cut, and are happy with your selection click NEXT, the file will automatically save itself into the same directory as the origional, and will keep the same filename, but will have "001" added onto it.

*NOTE: MP3 FILES MUST BE NO LONGER THAN 30 SECONDS*

Once you have cropped the file, you need to convert the settings of the mp3, to do this, i use a program called DB Power Amp, its freeware and can also be downloaded from download.com (http://www.download.com)

Once you have selected the cropped mp3 file, you need to convert it using the settings used in the picture below...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v612/x_boob_man_x/1.jpg

after setting up as in the picture above, click on the advanced options button and set up with the following settings

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v612/x_boob_man_x/DBPoweramp.jpg

once that file is converted, you need to protect the file, this is done with a handy piece of software called Sony Ericsson Digital Rights Management Packager

Step 1.

Download and install the Sony Ericsson Digital Rights Management Packager

Step 2.
Select a mp3 you would like to protect. In this example we will use a small mp3 sound effect.
(Right click save target/link as) http://lasyk.addr.com/joannak/ohoh.mp3

Step 3.
Run DRM Packager
Start->Programs-> Sony Ericsson-> DRM Packager-> DRM Packager
Go to File, add files and select the mp3 you saved from the link above.

Step 4. (Configuration)
Go to Options -> Configuration -> and select combined delivery and click OK

Step 5 (Rights)
Go to Options -> Rights
Please fill in the following information:
Content ID: myForumExample
@ : Lasyk.net
Enable right = checked
Start time checked and date set to January 1st, 2000
Start time checked and date set to January 1st, 2010
click OK

Step 6 Creating the dm file(s)
Click on Create DRM content
Now you can send this file to your device , you will be able to set this mp3 as a ringtone

Important note : The mp3 is saved using the dm extension. You must send ohoh.dm and not ohoh.mp3
Output

ohoh.dm

* The values used in this example are imaginary

Search Keywords: Vodafone Branded Phone, S700i Vodafone, Set Mp3 ringtone, mp3 ringtones

RINGTONES POSTED AS MP3'S ARE LIBALE TO BE REMOVED

*PLEASE NOTE CREDIT FOR THE DRM SECTION GOES TO THE WEBMASTER

Hi craig iv downloaded alot of your ringtones and they r great but u ever thought of doin it just by using a mic on your pc speakers and using software that just records it and saves it as mp3? just a thought since looking at how you do it could be a bit of a hassle for you if you are doing a load of requests for people

There are programmes that don't require a mic to record music for mp3. The idea is taking a song u allready have and edit it the way u want. It's hard to do that with a mic (needs many attempts to get the desired cut). Well anyone can use the method that fits them...

For those who might want another program to split their tunes i found a very easy to use free program. It's called mp3Trim and it only got me 2 minutes to understand. For small cuts use the frame menu which lets u trim 1/10 of a second making your ringtone as precise as you like. Also has a fade in/out option to make nice endings and beginnings. :)

.dm files are not compatible with Motorola, rename the file from .dm to .mp3 and then send it to your phone, should work fine then bud :D

do you have to convert it to *.dm if my phone is unbranded?? and what settings should i use if it is unbranded, ie bitrate etc etc??

PhoenixBurn

If your phone isn't branded then as far as I know, you don't need to.
As for the bit rate, I guess 128/196 is fine..

i just have a little tip: if you want to edit/cut the mp3 exactly (and also see the waveforms) i would recommend u to try either CoolEdit or Steinberg Wavelab (which can be found in most of the DC-hubs or in the bigger torrent trackers. Great programs which gives you absolute control over every single ms of music... =)

thanks for a good guide!

and another tip ;) u can download "Sony Ericsson Digital Rights Management Packager" at this adress:

Have been wondering..
On Linkin Park Collision Course DVD I have seen them use like a wave editor and they can see the guitar and drums (I assume) and can edit, delete etc. on any song.
Anyone know of any program to do that?

for our phones even 96 Kbps or 64 Kbps would be enough...
122 Kbps is good also...but 196 for a SE external speaker? don't you think is much? the external speaker is not covering all the frequences...only the high ones...:(
i wish there was a 2.1 SE phone and to be very very loud...
