Do all Vodafone branded phones have this "feature"? If I understand right, you just can't use them as ringtones, but can you play them? Is it the same for the V630i?

My First post. I actually did the mp3 thing and it works on my phone but I just have 2 questions:
1. I used a song that I already have as an .mp3 for the player so now I have the same song twice. Can I get rid of the .mp3 and use this ringtone file for my player on the phone or not?
Bluetooth through Mac OS:X...
Sony sent me this e-mail:
[i]A recent change has occurred with MP3 restrictions on phones sold through Rogers Wireless and Fido Mobility. This change restricts the ability to use MP3 music as ring tones. This restriction is imbedded into the phone and cannot be changed in the software either manually or through a Software Update. Please note that this change is not specific only to Sony Ericsson phones, but to every brand of phone that Rogers and Fido sells commencing July 2006. If you are unhappy with this restriction, please contact your dealer where the phone was purchased to discuss this matter.[i]
Then Rogers told me it was illegal to use MP3's as ringtones due to copyright law... Due to public broadcasting of copyrighted material... Why then, do they allow me to play my MP3's through the MP3 player on the phone through the speaker phone. I gave the counterargument that I was a music artist (thus owning rights), and they said have the Rogers store call Sony, and have Sony find a way to fix it.
All in all, the customer service experience was terrible as I was assured by the Rogers Sales Associate that MP3's can be used as ringtones... I'm going to go in tonight, have him say that, and just voice record it and mail it to Rogers... I'll tell you how that goes...
As an aside, I'll keep looking for a way to get audio files to work as MP3s... I thought monopolies on products (read: ringtones) were illegal... Obviously not for rogers.
2 *concerning Bott's post* I'm with Fido and I wanted to know, if they could find out what I;m doing on my phone [using this DRM thing and being able to use mp3's as ringtones] because when I go the the ringtone file, it shows an mp3 icon but along that it also shows a white box/rectangle with a key at the bottom. Anyone know what that means and if it can cause any legal issues with me and Fido?

Waaah. I just bought myself a Vodaphone W580i and I've just been sifting through the forums here and seeing that Vodaphones are completely horrible. I'm starting to think it was a bad idea buying it now...
Is there an easy way to debrand my phone? Just via Software maybe?
(Oh, first post. Yay. ^_^)

Does this ringtone thing affect Orange phones in the UK?

No, I don't think so. It's only Vodaphone apparently.
And I'm not too sure about that either now, since I got my phone about a week ago and it doesn't have any type of crap loaded on it in any way.
So... =/

@missD
If you have the Original Mp3 files you repeat the process with the appropriate dates;)

Yes, it works for all SE that are branded and do not allow non-drm MP3's as ringtones.

Exact same problem for me, exact same phone.
Much love to anyone who can check this out for us.
I have the file, on the phone as a .dm
I have saved it both to the memory card and also tried direct to the phone, not that it should matter.
The only options I have to do with the file once it is on the phone, is to send it to someone else or move it.
I cannot use it as a ringtone still, and worse than before - I can't even play it in the mp3 player for obvious reasons.
Help?

I got my se 508i a couple weeks ago and i've been searching forums such as this one to figure out how to make my mp3's work as ringtones. I dl about 6 different programs and went through everything that the last 9 pages went through and nothing worked for me. Then my buddy told me about a program he uses and I had my ringtone set up in 5 minutes or less. Do yourself a favor and just go to www.myxertones.com Its free and so painless. The only other program i'd suggest using is "mp3 knife" which i dl'ed from download.com. This program will let you cut out the part of the song you want to use as your ringtone. Then you can use myxer to download the file you cut to your phone. easy.

Step 1.
Download (http://myforum.lasyk.net/showpost.php?p=231673&postcount=73) and install the Sony Ericsson Digital Rights Management Packager
Step 2.
Select a mp3 you would like to protect. In this example we will use a small mp3 sound effect.
(Right click save target/link as) http://lasyk.addr.com/joannak/ohoh.mp3
Step 3.
Run : SE : DRM Packager
Start->Programs-> Sony Ericsson-> DRM Packager-> DRM Packager
Go to File, add files and select the mp3 you saved from the link above.
Step 4. (Configuration)
Go to Options -> Configuration -> and select combined delivery and click OK
Step 5 (Rights)
Go to Options -> Rights
Please fill in the following information:
Content ID: myForumExample
@ : Lasyk.net
Enable right = checked
Start time checked and date set to "whatever today is"
End time checked and date set to "any day you want after today"
click OK
Step 6 Creating the dm file(s)
Click on Create DRM content
Now you can send this file to your device , you will be able to set this mp3 as a ringtone
Important note : The mp3 is saved using the dm extension. You must send ohoh.dm and not ohoh.mp3
Output
ohoh.dm (http://lasyk.addr.com/joannak/ohoh.dm)
* The values used in this example are imaginary ;)
Search Keywords: Vodafone Branded Phone, S700i Vodafone, Set Mp3 ringtone, mp3 ringtones
just one thing to change to make it work, for the start date, make it the day you are changing the file (ie. today is sept 15, 2008, so start date should be sept 15, 2008, end date can be anything after that), hopefully this helps most of you if you were following the instructions word for word
and yes this will work for canadian phones, it worked on my rogers k850i, so ill, got crank ringtone now :D

Does this not work with an LG TE365 Neon?
When the DRM file is created the phone doesn't recognize it, and when I change the extension of the DRM file from .DM to .MP3, the phone recognizes the file, but it considers it unprotected still.
Any solutions to this?
