What kind of MPEG are you talking about? MPEG 3 and 4 work great for me!

Okay, I've been reading how people can get the DRM Packager to work with their K790a's, but I can't.
I tried using the DRM Packager in DRM settings (forward-lock, combined delivery, separate delivery, Sony Ericsson).
I copy the .dm file to my phone (Phone Memory, don't have the M2 card yet) connected in Phone Mode via the USB cable. I tried putting it in the Music folder, I tried the Other folder. No good.
I try the ohoh.dm file too, no good. The icons for the .dm files as read on my phone is a sheet of paper (with lines on them to symbolize words), and next to that, a key crossed out by a red line.
I had a W810i before (got it stolen...) and I still had the .dm file I used for ringtone (that worked). I put that same .dm file onto my phone, it doesn't work @.@
Is there anything I can do to use MP3 ringtones, without converting to AMR or WAV, or debranding?

I know exactly your problem. I had it at first.
Use the settings that I did. That is forward delivery. It also must be bluetoothed to the phone according to all my research... It must be dropped in the main folder of the phone. Not into any of the subfolders.
On a mac, it goes into the directory that is opened. Not under phone memory or its subfolders.

...I think I just worked it out, even using the USB cable.
Here's what I did,
DRM'ed the file using DRM Packager, foward-lock setting
Opened File Manager
Selected my phone
Dragged .dm file into there
"Saved in Music in phone memory. Use now?" -> Yes -> Ringtone

@KickassKev
It seems that the Sony Ericsson K790a requires forward locked files to allow you to set your mp3's as ringtones.

I can sent the dm file less then 3MB to K790a by bluetooth with combined delivery format ! No problem at all
However, If I try to sent the dm file bigger than 3MB, K790a will reboot
and it has "The file transfer was not successful" "This Bluetooth device or computer canot process files of this type" error on my pc
I have 29MB free memory on my phone
I tried the forward lock! It didn't work for me
Any idea?

Perhaps try the Data Cable?

if I use the USB cable copy the file to Music folder:
I got the following problem:
The icons for the .dm files as read on my phone is a sheet of paper (with lines on them to symbolize words), and next to that, a key crossed out by a red line
so, I can't use it at all

Refer to Post #104. Install File Manager.
It works, IF you follow Post #104 instructions (scroll up a bit).

As I am using Windows Vista that why I can not intall those sony softwares
I switch back to windows xp and install all the software( File Mananger etc)
and used the Post #104 method, then it is working fine with both format:
--combined delivery format
--Forward Lock
Now I can use MP3 as ringtone
Thanks a lot!

I figured it out!!
You have to transfer the file by bluetooth, while the phone is on, to the primary phone directory, after being received the phone will install the .dm file into the Music file...
Photos of my DRM file settings:
I got it to work with the forward one, and without setting any expiry dates on the content.
AWESOME thank you dude!! and F rogers!

No luck for me. Followed directions to a T. Tried forward lock and combined delivery. No matter what, I can get it to the phone, it will play but refuses to use it as a ringtone. It even refused to use WAV file as ringtone. I have a Cingular branded W810i. Looks like I'll be looking to unbrand soon...

hey webmaster i tried the step that use said would work i i think im messing up somewhere along the way. i downloaded the software but everytime i open it is asking me to set it up again, after i do that and save my song and stuff then click create dmr it says files are successfully protected but then when i go to put it on the phone is sayes file cannot be opeed. im not the smartes computer guy out their ill admit that.
I have tried this with the w810i. I have now tried to put it on a k790 and it wont work. I tried to send it using --combined delivery format
--Forward Lock ( why do they not allow you to set beginging and ending for these? I send it to the phone and place it in the music file ringtones. THe file shows a text form and a key with a strike in it. There must be something I am doing wrong. I dont have a memory card and I am using a usb data cable. THis worked perfectly with the other phone:(

The way I did it was to convert the mp3's that I wanted to use to wav files. Thenit worked like a charm. I tried all the other methods mentioned but they didn't work for me. It's still ticks me off that I can't make use of the features the phone came with  but at least I'm not paying Roger's for theirs either.

I just found that Nolia has a free multi media converter that will change wav to AWB, AMR and 3gp. I converted some of my mp3's to wav, which the phone used as well but take up more space, to AWB which the phone also plays and uses as ringtones at a fraction of the space.

I've tried it and it works. I had to d/l the pc suite program from the sony website b/c the file manager program that came with my phone didn't recognize the phone. You saved me from breaking the warranty on my phone.
Much appreciated!!!

I also must thank webmaster@lasyk.net for this great info. I too wanted to debrand my phone just to be able to use certain mp3's as ringtunes on my Rogers (***holes) branded phone. Now thanks to this thread I don't have to go through the trouble of flashing my phone and possibly f***ing something up. Thanks-a-million!

Hey I can't get this DRM-Packager method to work. I have a new W810i from Cingular with R4EA031 firmware and I think they protected it to not work with this anymore. I have tried ALL four DRM methods (forward lock, combined, etc.) and copied the .dm file to my phone and it never lets me set it as a ringtone. Ahh do I need to debrand it?? I really don't want to do that. ><

I also have R4EA031 firmware and everything works fine. Did you set the date so that the license has not expired yet??? When I convert to .dm format I set the expiry date to year 2010 and that guarantees the file will work on the phone until that date. Hope this helps.

Is yours a branded or unbranded with R4EA031? Mine is branded and I checked 'Enable right' while making the start date a day before and usually making the end year 2009, just tried your 2010 with no luck.
EDIT:
huh. I just tried without setting start and end dates and it no longer let me transfer in through bluetooth, which seems to mean the copy protection is working so I went through USB and it still wont let me set the mp3 as a ringtone.

I have a w810 with R4EA031 firmware branded to Rogers Wireless here in Canada. Okay here are the settings I'm using and it seems to be co-operating on my end so I hope these same settings will work for you aswell.
In Global configuration options
DRM method: combined delivery
Configuration options for forward-lock and combined delivery
Encoding Type: binary
Settings for seperate and combined delivery
Content ID: I use my username@lasyk.net
Rights
check Enable right
check Start time: I use 2006 date
check End time: I use 2010 date
That's about it I think, with these settings I was successfully able to convert a .mp3 to .dm and set it to play as a ring tune on my phone just now.

I bought my K790 yesterday and spent several hours trying to use the DRM packaging software to make it work. I tried all of the options suggestions by other k790 users with the cable. I then tried my ibook which has bluetooth, and the phone and the ibook recognize each other but can't seem to transfer even small files between one another. Any ideas about getting the ibook and the k790 communicating at this level?
P.S. Also PAID for a ringtone from rogers.com but it didn't work either, lol. I got credited by customer service, but I don't want those crappy and expensive ringtones anyway.

i just got my phone from rogers today , i did everything what i could but the only was i got it to work is to drop off the .dm file with forward-locked delivery right into the "phone memory" folder .
i_rodeo
08-06-2007, 08:17 AM
^^ yes me too,
forward-locked, then it gives you a .dcf file on your phone
but for my k790a, i had to use bluetooth then drop into phone memory folder, then when finished transfer, it will ask "Use now", then you should be able to use as ringtune (usb cable didn't work in my case)
or on my friend w810i, was to drop by usb cable to your memory card music file, then the file can be used for ringtune. (bluetooth works also)

hi all,
I converted mp3 file to dm and put it on the web, then I try to download it, phone alerts that this file type doesn't supported, and if I download it anyway, phone places dm file to folder Other, but I still can't play that file.
What could be the problem? Should I use data cable only?
I have old SE F500i with R2AE033 software.

I recently purchased the SE w580i from Rogers and I was confused with the instructions found here, so I found a more detailed tutorial @ http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=137679 (the post was made by Scrambles). It's a hassle, but I finally got it to work.
MP3 ring tones / ring tunes on branded Sony Ericsson K790/K790a/K790i
I have seen a number of posts online re: how to use MP3s as ring tones / ring tunes on the Sony Ericsson K790. The response to most people's inquiries is to de-brand your phone, however there are lots of people out there that don't want to tinker that much or risk losing their warranty.
Below is a solution for branded phones (I'm using a Rogers phone, freshly purchased).
Overall: The two key things to successfully transferring over your MP3s for use as ring tones, alarms, etc. is (1) converting them to DRM files, and (b) using the Sony Ericsson File Manager software and dragging the DRM files simply to your phone, not the Phone Memory or Memory Stick folders. Here are the detailed instructions for Windows-based PCs.
1. Install the Sony Ericsson DRM Packager software (http://developer.sonyericsson.com/site/global/docstools/misc/p_misc.jsp)
2. Install the Sony Ericsson PC Suite software (included on the CD that came with your phone)
3. Open the Sony Ericsson DRM Packager software
4. Go to the Options menu -> Configuration
5. Change the DRM Method to 'forward-lock'
6. (optional) Specify an Output directory where your DRM files will be saved
7. Press OK
8. Click the 'Add...' button
9. Select one or more MP3 files on your computer
10. Ensure the Output Directory is specified at the bottom of the window
11. Click the 'Create DRM Content' button
12. An alert will pop up when the files have been converted
13. Connect your phone to your computer with your USB cable (I am unable to provide instructions for Bluetooth)
14. On your phone, you will be prompted to select File Transfer, Phone Mode or Print. DO NOT select any of the above, just leave the phone how it is.
15. Open the Sony Ericsson PC Suite software. It should specify that your phone is connected in Phone mode. If not, your phone is not connected properly.
16. Open the File Manager in the Sony Ericsson PC Suite software
17. On the left side of the File Manager window, you should see your cell phone listed in the Sony Ericsson File Manager folder. Click your phone name.
18. On the right side of the File Manager you should see the Phone Memory and/or Memory Stick listed. DO NOT double click either of these, just leave the window how it is.
19. Open the Output Directory that you specified in step 6 or 10 above (i.e. using My Computer / Windows Explorer)
20. Drag ONE DRM file from your Output Directory (just one file, not multiple files) to the right side of the Sony Ericsson File Manager window. This will start the file transfer and you will notice the progress on your phone's screen.
21. A few seconds after the file transfer has completed, your phone will prompt you: "Saved in Music in phone memory. Use now?" You can select either Yes or No. At this point the file has been transferred successfully to your phone and you will be able to select it as a ring tune, alarm, etc.
22. Repeat steps 20-21 with as many files as you would like. You can later move them into other folders on your phone, or to your memory stick. They do not need to stay in the Music folder.
